Earlier we noted how to add the starter Character Controller. The goal of the starter Character Controller is to provide the “skeleton” of a character, an easy way to add a character to a project while we work on getting animations on top of them. To setup the Character Controller, simply follow the instructions here.

Before we get to Retargeting, it’s important that you understand what changes are made by using the Character Controller, and why we recommend not using it by default. When you set up the Character Controller, it sets up a skeleton for your character, and then a set of controls to update the character skeleton. This is done inside of a Timeline with the Character Controller timeline set to the desired animation of your character, and the Performance Timeline set to whatever is needed. If you want to work on a set of animations without a timeline (e.g. a placeholder), you can connect them directly to your Skeleton by opening the Character Controller, going to the Setup Tab, and changing the Timeline Mode to “Instant Play” – see the screenshot below. However, using the Instant Play Timeline Mode requires you to manually adjust the timeline on your Skeleton to match the Character Controller’s timeline. The Character Controller can be fully “locked” by using the Params Tab – see the screenshot below for more details. Finally, if you want to use a sprite as the Character Controller, you need to manually add the VDB. The “skeleton” of the Character Controller is set up as part of the skeleton setup process of the “Skeleton” tab. While we’ve worked on adapting the character controller to make it easier to use, its important to remember that it’s not the replacement for a character animation on a root VDB.
