contrary to rumors, no ai (artificial intelligence) systems are being developed for world rally 4. no computer will be capable of driving a rally car, even under the most forgiving conditions. no amount of artificial intelligence could ever win a rally event, regardless of how the telemetry of such a rally is presented.
three different types of gameplay are available in world rally 4. the main game is real driving 4, where players master the thrill and challenge of accurate rally driving. first person rally control allows players to experience rally driving through a series of battles in the driver’s seat. ghost passing is a trick-mode with a selection of in-race challenges and driving concepts. wrc 4 also features a community-driven track designer, as well as community-driven special events. on top of this, world rally 4 is fully compatible with global rallycross which allows the player to customize their car through parts and make-ups. however, in order to play as an arcade racer the players will need to buy a special package that will let them race without having the ultimate package of the real version of the game. there is an option for fans who are reluctant to buy the wrc 4 but know that the sony and microsoft versions of the game have the background music of the real wrc.
for a game that features so many cars and so many parts, it doesnt really need menus, it would be nice to see them go though, not many cars have more than four things to do inside, but what the game lacks in parts, it makes up for in authenticity.
to get you geared up for a single stage, you have a course preview that allows you to know what the road will be like ahead of time. a return to road to glory, wrc 4 makes a nice road course and circuit sequence, though a few patches have gone into the tech section of the stages to make it more realistic. these smaller sections of the level include: an obstacle course, a night event, and a rain race. the change in weather, especially the rain event, makes the game more interesting and enjoyable. due to the realistic presentation in the mechanics of the cars and the ability to kick your weight around, you almost feel as if youre driving the real thing, which is what a rally game should be. the controls are simple as well, with an accelerator, brake, gearbox and clutch to manipulate at will, and a drift option to make crazy turns without slipping out.
wrc 4 has a career mode, which along with a good tutorial, allows you to get a grasp of the basics for a rally driver. youre assigned a car liveries across the 8 manufacturers in the series. this is then your car; its mechanics and vehicle level are your skill and experience. you start out with two stages to run, timed agains other competitors ghosts, and their experience points get added to your pool. in one stage, you will pass a number of checkpoints, and based on these, you will be scored and placed in one of three possible classes. this goes on from there, with a few re-skinned countries with different cars and weather, culminating with a full championship event with a ton of different circuits and countries. this does take some time to complete, but its definitely the way to go as to learning the ins and outs of the event itself.
