The full list of gameplay, history and release dates for Wolfenstein titles is a long one. However, the time now has come to show you our own list of top Wolfenstein games. The list is in no particular order, however, this list contains games that have been developed by different organizations throughout the game’s history. However, all of the games have certain characteristics that are almost certain to be noticed: Wolfenstein games are all about killing Nazis. They are the unseen antagonist of every game in this list, and that has only increased over the years. The original Wolfenstein was the game that started the series, and the one that started the first-person shooter genre, the second game was still aimed at killing Nazis, but in a more stealthy way. The following game, and the first non-id Software release on its own, brought gunplay back to the forefront, and the popularity of this game is the reason we can enjoy the experience we have in 2012 with bothWolfenstein.3D.Ultimate.Collectionand the Xbox 360’sWolfenstein.
If you enjoy some of the other games on this list, the original Wolfenstein and Wolfenstein 3D are available for both the PC and Mac via the Steam online store. Below the jump, youll find a link to the Steam page for it. Its one of the best PC FPSs on the Mac, but its not available directly on the Mac platform.
However, this version is no slouch in the sheer amount of content. The old-school levels of the original game have been ported into this game, and these have also been entirely revamped and have re-recorded sound (without the German accents), and a new feature of the original levels has been added: they now have difficulty levels. These are only noticeable in the first game, in which the Castle level is much easier than the World War II levels. In those levels, the enemy is not fully cleared until the final boss, while in Castle Wolfenstein, you get an extra life for every single kill. The story continues after the Castle levels, leading up to the Third Reich and the end of the war.
All of these improvements are not enough to mask the game flaws, though: low quality textures, mostly poorly modeled and shaded soldiers, and very basic levels that lack any semblance of either fun or challenge, though the music in the game often helps contribute to the experience. The game plays just like the other 3D shooters that came before it: Many gun targets are hard to hit, and enemies are often hard to see, but where the game stands out is that like Doom, Wolfenstein 3D cant be queued up, and the game plays in real time. The action is usually fast-paced and fun, but it does not have any proper rhythm or enemy spawning or fighting strategy. The best part of the game is not the destructible environments or how creative your kills are, but the fact that when the action slows down, and youre out of ammo, you just gain another life. Although there are maps where you play as a tank, jumping from map to map with unlimited lives and health is not possible, instead you must run the length of one map before returning to the starting point and reliving the action.
The Sega CD had a few games that could only be played by turning the console upside down, though it did have a few 3D shooters, most notablyWolfenstein 3D,Prince of Persia, andLords of Thunder, though the latter two are somewhat disappointing for 3D shooters since the difficulty level is so high (at that time), and the slow pace of the action is slow. The Sega CD version ofWolfenstein 3Dis much better than the Amiga port, actually playing the same as the PC version and leaving out the boring popups. Unlike the Amiga port, the PC version of the CD release features full high-resolution graphics, and some of the enemies reappear in the greenhouse stage, though it requires the use of a cheat engine to find their locations. On the Sega CD, this is a lot of work for such a minor speed increase, but the fans enjoy the gameplay.
