Multiple threads writing to Dictionary

I have a class that uses a Dictionary and I want to make sure that the Dictionary is thread-safe.
Does the Dictionary class in.NET support thread-safe reading and writing to values, and are multiple threads serialized?
I’ve read some posts on the subject, but they are either not clear enough or some contradictory.

No, it does not.
Dictionaries are, by design, inherently not thread safe. The first reason for this is that they employ reference semantics, which makes it impossible to lock them: if you try to, you would end up preventing all threads from updating the values stored in the dictionary (they would all be seeing the same values).
The next problem is that dictionaries tend to have a complex structure (they depend on the hashing algorithm to work correctly and they have to keep track of all keys and values that have been added). It’s very unlikely that this is going to work across more than a handful of threads, even if it is possible to implement that logic.
So, the logical thing to do is to just not do it. If you want more, you can look at ConcurrentDictionary, which is a mutexed dictionary, and LockDictionary, which is a mutexed dictionary that has been designed to be able to synchronise on.
There are also dedicated collections that are specifically designed to be thread safe, such as ConcurrentBag and ConcurrentQueue.
