the truerta is a great instrument for the pro audio engineer who wants to do their own tests. it is great for engineers who are setting up their own test labs for input/output and preamp designs. it is also great for the enthusiast. it is easy to use and its features are broad and deep. and, best of all, it is absolutely free. and i’m sure the manufacturers will continue to release upgrades as the software and hardware continue to evolve.

the rta mode is available for human hearing and for acoustical analysis (rta-adc). it can measure the sound energy of a signal and the transient response of the human ear (auditory nerve). the rta mode is the mode that is included in the standard version of truerta. in the graphical rta mode, the sound energy can be measured for a specified time (duration). the auditory nerve response (anr) can be measured for a specified time (duration). in the rta-adc mode, the rta, and anr modes are turned on simultaneously. you can use the mouse to set the time and the button to stop the measurement.

truerta portable is an universal rta frequency domain analyser. it works with.rta files, sounds recordings or prepared music files. it can be used as a portable version. it can work with the following file types:.snd,.wav,.au,.aup,.ra,.rra,.rta,.srr,.srr. the.srr extension was added in truerta version 3.02, and is used for super res audio recording. in.rta the recording length and the sampling rate can be set.

figure 1 shows the truerta gui. the setup routine for truerta is very intuitive and user-friendly. however, the setup menu does not include a mode selection feature. therefore, the truerta software may not be useful if you want to test your gear using a mode other than the default pink noise (figure 2). furthermore, the software does not provide a way to save your results. at first, i had to play around with truerta to get the analysis window up and running. it takes less than a minute to get used to truerta. the truerta gui has a sophisticated oscilloscope-like display for the analysis mode. it is one of the best screens youll ever see in a pc audio program. the oscilloscope will zoom in to display data at a user-defined level. you can scroll the display up and down using the arrows at the right end of the screen. this will zoom in and out of the audio frequency analysis. the scrolling is very accurate and does not introduce any interference into the sound. truerta also has a spectrum display mode which is an elegant design and, like the oscilloscope, very easy to use. the frequencies can be displayed using an up-down slider or simply scrolled through by using the right and left arrows at the bottom of the window. this is a very useful feature for presenting a frequency sweep. the truerta gui has three buttons at the bottom of the window: set mode, set analysis and setup. the analysis mode can be pink noise, sweep, quick sweep, and select a waveform from a collection. the analysis window will open after each of these modes is selected. the software offers the user a choice of three display modes: windows, rta and oscilloscope. the rta mode is the most interesting one. in this mode, the program creates a graph of the frequency response as an audio waveform and displays the selected waveform over that graph. the oscilloscope mode displays the frequency response as an oscilloscope-like graph. the oscilloscope displays the frequency response as a graph. the rta mode allows the user to make a frequency response measurement of audio equipment using one or more audio files. it is a unique feature and different from the other two modes. i have not seen this feature in any other software. this mode is very useful when you need to study a frequency response and its slope at a specific frequency. for example, you can first plot the response of a speaker system using the quick sweep mode. then, you can select the frequency of interest and plot that frequency sweep over the original response. truerta also has a mode switcher. this feature allows you to automatically switch between the modes that are currently selected. truerta has a huge number of features and capabilities. the software is stable and fast. the only problem i noticed with truerta is that the rta mode (which i find the most useful) is not available in the manual. truerta can be downloaded from the link below.

in the rta mode, you get control of the audio frequency generator as well as the sampling rate. you can also monitor and control the output signal level. truerta rta is a “must” for audio testing and quality control in the audio research and development industry.
the mpr mode is also a “must” for most audio testing in the audio research and development industry. you get to monitor the audio waveform generated by the instrument while at the same time, you can measure the audio levels or filter the audio signal.
truerta delivers a spectrum view of the audio signal you generated or monitored. you can select the frequency range from a few hz to more than 100 khz. after viewing the spectrum, you can quickly view the audio waveform in either the time or frequency domain. you can also hear the audio in stereo and mono.
in the main truerta window, there are two main panels, the input and output panels. these panels display the input signal and the output signal, respectively. in the input panel, you have a choice to display the input signal as a waveform, as a spectrum, or as a time domain plot. in the output panel, you can display the input signal as a waveform, as a spectrum, as a time domain plot, or you can measure the output signal.
the second truerta window is the power meter window. this window displays the power output of the generator and amplifier over a range of frequencies. you can also select the power meter type. you have a choice of two types, the y-axis and rms meters. and, the voltage/power measuring range can be selected.
the third truerta window is the oscilloscope window. this window displays the input signal as a waveform and is controlled by the oscilloscope time base. the frequency of the input signal is set by the oscilloscope time base, and the sweep trigger is set for either the left or right channel, or both.
