ahmad is the king of bagdad. his vizier, the wily jaffar, has kept him isolated in his castle his whole life. one day, ahmad decides to go out into the city disguised as a peasant, so he can learn more about his people. jaffar, sensing a chance to seize power, sends guards after the king; ahmad has just enough time to hear a prophecy about a boy saving his city before jaffar’s guards capture him and throw him into the dungeons. he is sentenced to death in the morning, but luckily for ahmad, he’s trapped in jail with abu, a young thief who has bagdad and the dungeon keys in his pocket.

in the 1920s, modern film was in its infancy. the earliest movies were made in vaudeville theaters, and were often comedies. the next stage of film was in european and american art houses, and in the 1920s, the studios started making serious dramas and westerns, some of which were still being seen in american theaters when the thief of bagdad was made. the 1920s were not the best time for film, but the art house theaters were popular, and moviegoers liked to go to the movies, so the film industry persevered. the movie industry was more successful than the musical, perhaps because moviegoers wanted to see more than just musicals. the studios, however, werent always sure what to do. one thing they did was go to the east, and particularly to egypt and india, to use exotic locations and shoot exotic stories. it was a risky move because it hadnt been done before, but it paid off. if you thought all films were made in hollywood, think again.
