this is a story about the lab software i cracked during my first semester of high school in the fall of 2008. the software was developed by internet-based company called avigilon. the lab software was the only software on my computer, so i had to crack it to be able to run my science projects. this was my first semester of high school, and i had no idea how to crack the software. i turned to my computer science teacher for advice. mr. h provided me with the answer to my problem. he went to the company’s website and learned that the lab software was based on compactflash media. the company’s website stated that the software was protected by a “layer” of the file system, and that the compression algorithm used by the software was one-way encrypted.
i was in high school, and i was unfamiliar with the terms “layer,” “one-way encryption,” and “compression algorithm,” so i went to the blackhat website to find out more about the first of those terms. i learned that a file system is the way that your operating system stores your files, and that a layer is a set of tools that allow you to access files even when those files have been encrypted. i also learned that one-way encryption is a method that stores information in encrypted format but not in a format that is readable from the outside.
