The fracture toughness of 316H material was evaluated. The fracture toughness was determined by three-point bend testing, using precracked Charpy V-notch (PCVN) specimens. In this article, micromechanical finite element (FE) analysis was carried out to investigate the corrosion cracking behaviour of Ti6Al4V alloy under quasi-static oxidation condition. The FE models were established by means of 3D FEM solver named WUKIFEM module within software package MSC Marc/ALM20. The chemical reactions and diffusional transport processes were adequately considered. It was found that the height of interface of reaction zone decreases with increase in the thickness of oxide layer, which induced the nonuniform distribution of thickness of reaction layer and enlarged the Tafel slope of the oxygen concentration profile. The main reason of this phenomenon was that the oxidation rate was affected by the electrical current density and the space charge. The oxide stress was caused by both the interface state and the conductivity of the oxide layer. The crack initiation was determined by whether the oxide layer was thick enough to pass the crack or not. So the length of crack firstly extended along the oxide thickness and then curved along the surface. The position of crack tip was also affected by the conductivity of oxide layer. The oxide stress was generally responsible for the shape of the crack tip. The elongation of the crack tip was related to the difference of conductivity between the oxide layer and metal substrate.
