Iparticularly liked its ability to link to other programs (such as Finale), or to createa PDF file that can be emailed to students. In addition, Music Publisher has afetch of features such as a note editor that will even let you add timings forsections of a song. Similarly, ClarisWorks Music Editor includesa powerful notation editor that can be easily configured to work within Music Publisher, or ina standalone mode. Both packages also come with excellent, easy-to-learn music learningoptions, and excellent support. Music Publisher’s music books are also sold seperately and are invaluable resources if you’ve found a reference for notation methods and/orsettings that you can’t find anywhere else. ClarisWorks Music Publisher is a package that should also find a place in every music teacher’sstockist.
Finale’s sound quality is beyond reproach – rather more like that of a dedicated MIDI-capableappliance than of a stand-alone application. It was often a little sharper, however, than I found the Behringer UCA202 to be, and hadslightly more distortion at the top and bottom. My 24-bit CDRWs rarely got it quite right – even the Max Mathematically-optimised ‘waveform’ options failed to present enough data – but it was the best I’d got under Windows XP. A fair bit of overkill, but there you go. The best thing about it is its compatibility – it plays back virtually anything I’d throw at it, including, in the case of audio files, the sometimes unfairly maligned AudioSuite.
The Max Mathematically-optimised ‘waveform’ options really are fairly limited, however, and I found that it’s often better to sharpen and boost the peaks, rather than try to mathematically smooth the valleys. Finale won’t fix PCM files, but will give you good results in the case of compressed WAV formats, or if you use.ogg or.mp3 files. There are also various types of MIDI file you can import. The new DLS ‘Doom’ folder file format, in particular, can give your scores a distinctive and appropriately scary-soundingtimbral quality.
Unlike more established applications such as Alesis MultiWave, Finale is going to cost you. Your total price at the time of review is around £199 for the base version, with add-ons either costing an extra £49 or offering more functionality, or both. For example, the Finale’s Max Toolset costs £79 and is priced above the level of functionality you get in the more basic packages. Max Toolset includes a host of great new audio processing tools including EQ, a compressor and limiter, and a despeller (for example, the idea of having to set up compression and other effects manually inFinale and then have the audio routed back to the original instrument is something you just can’t risk on a studio mix), as well as the AudioSuite instrument replacement ability, a host of more sophisticated sound processing options, and an edited, annotated copy of the soundfont from your favourite synth, such as the Esumeria Ultimate collection of Alesis synths.
