To assess the morphologic characteristics of the lamina cribrosa and to evaluate its association with glaucoma and pseudoexfoliation (PX) syndrome in the Korean population. University Eye Hospital, Seoul, Korea. Corneal nerve fiber length (NFL) measurements were performed in cross-sectioned images of lamina cribrosa (LC) in 30 eyes of 30 healthy control subjects, and in LC images of 32 eyes of 33 untreated open-angle glaucoma patients. To minimize observer-dependent effects, two masked observers performed measurements by the same semiautomatic image analysis system. Slit-lamp images were used to diagnose PX syndrome. In the control group, NFL in the temporal quadrant was significantly longer than that in the other 3 quadrants (P = 0.001), and that in the superior and nasal quadrants was significantly longer than that in the inferior quadrant (P = 0.006 and P = 0.042, respectively). In the glaucoma group, there was no significant difference in NFL among the 4 quadrants (P = 0.092), and in the comparison with the control group, NFL was significantly longer in the temporal and superior quadrants (P = 0.005 and P = 0.007, respectively). In the glaucoma group, NFL was significantly longer in eyes with and without PX syndrome (P = 0.005). There were no significant differences in NFL in the inferior quadrants with PX syndrome among all glaucoma patients (n = 33), patients without PX syndrome (n = 14), and patients with PX syndrome (n = 19).
