Roblox users are allowed to program their games using custom Lua code that runs in the Roblox game engine. All Roblox games are built as extensible, modular systems that may be used as they are, or extended and modified by users. By building games using Lua, the Games are created without having to create and learn a separate coding language.

To play a Roblox game, a Roblox player must either download and install the Roblox client app or create a free account on the Roblox website and log in using their unique user ID and password. Once logged in, a Roblox player must have a browser version of the software open in order to play Roblox games. Players can play Roblox games on mobile devices through a web browser, though the game will not load properly in the browser without cookies. Roblox games can be played with or without an internet connection.
