In-app purchases are a common feature in Roblox applications, with the user needing to purchase Robux to progress in the game. Robux is a virtual currency which can be used to purchase avatar customization options and additional game content. On February 5, 2013, Roblox announced that they would release an ad-free version of their website.
As of March 2019, Roblox has received generally positive reviews from critics. In particular, its content has been praised, though there have been criticisms related to social and gameplay issues. The site, which is targeted toward children and teenagers, has sold virtual items such as the ability to fly a spaceship and visit a royal castle for real-world money, as well as the ability to acquire in-game virtual currency. Users who have praised Roblox have also noted that the platform is relatively safe and well-maintained, among other benefits. There have also been criticisms from both users and academics regarding the monetization of content and content rating processes, as well as inadequate ethical policies regarding gender. Roblox has also faced criticism for its ongoing business practices.
