Log4Shell is quite odd and unique in the sense that it does not call out self-executable files (ergo no Java ClassLoader hijacking) and it has a self-relaxing resolution (solved by recompiling, unlike the original Log4j 2.x vulnerability). Log4Shell injects a script that abuses a Java functional from the log4j2 library to show a log message in a location of your choosing and executes anything remotely. This means that not only do you need to have a vulnerability in the remote service you are performing a login against but you need to have access to file system permissions to pull off the execution. This is are a different type of key since the attacker is not relying on the file system and only requires certain permissions on remote services to trigger an RCE.
Log4Shell is powerful but how do we make it easier to exploit? We leverage the susceptible component that has the insertion vulnerability that allows for the RCE to be achieved in any Java application that uses the log4j2 library. This allows for reusing code that leverages this vulnerability and increases the upfront cost per pull off.
The log4j2 library uses the SUFFIX mechanism to assign tags to a Java file called resource.log4j2. Every single time you see a message appearing in your log that has an assigned tag you can see the name of the file that caused the log message to appear. Once we get access to the file name we can get the binary representation of the file that we can then leverage the vulnerability to execute arbitrary code remotely in a Java application that has access to the application directory!
The vulnerability could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on a system with software using the log4j2 Java library to log information and messages. The vulnerability was found within the log4j2 library included with Java 7.
