dhanush plays the role of a heart-broken and revengeful kundan in raanjhanaa movie. from a young age, kundan believes that zoya is his twin brother because they both were born on the same day. kundan’s wealthy uncle, akram, is zoyas second husband, and is also her ex-fiancé. akram is a sikh, but zoya, a muslim, convinces kundan that akram is a muslim. she convinces kundan that akram is the father of their illegitimate daughter. zoya’s father is a muslim who is unaware of zoya’s marriage to akram. akram’s father, however, is against the marriage, as he is a sikh. kundan is enraged when he learns that akram is actually jasjeet singh shergill, a sikh, and goes to akram’s village to confront akram. akram’s father is a powerful man and the village head, and he beats kundan. he then has akram take kundan home, but once there, kundan again confronts akram. akram reveals to kundan that zoya was a lesbian and tries to prove that he was the father of her illegitimate daughter, whom he has raised as his own. akram then reveals the truth about the murder of kundan’s parents. kundan leaves akram’s home, devastated. shortly thereafter, akram’s family takes him back to his village. kundan’s family disowns him for what he has done to akram. after a few years, akram and zoya marry and akram’s family takes him back to his village. on the day of zoyas marriage, kundan finds out that akram is a sikh, whose actual name is jasjeet singh shergill. this enrages him, as zoya had used their religious differences to convince him that their match was not possible. he crashes the wedding ceremony and reveals the truth to zoyas parents. kundan is later informed that zoya tried to commit suicide, and jasjeet was mercilessly beaten by zoyas relatives. at the hospital, jasjeet tells kundan that zoya convinced him to portray himself as muslim to marry her, a plan he should not have agreed to. while with jasjeet, kundan forgets about his own marriage ceremony with bindiya, taking place that day, and is too late when he returns. hurt and angry, kundans family disowns him. jasjeets parents take him back to his village. kundan tries to redeem himself by taking zoya to jasjeets village. there, he is devastated to find that jasjeet has succumbed to his injuries, finally understanding that his one-sided love has resulted in an innocent mans death.

Sonam for once does justice to her role, she grew into her role as the movie progressed and gave a telling performance that she could reflect back with pride.
