Quantum Circular Box Applet is a simulation of a two-dimensional quantum particle in a circular well.
The goal is to explore the behavior of a quantum particle by observing the form of the probability
distribution and the behavior of the quantum phase.
Note: This application is for fun. It isn’t a class or a course. You are free to use it for your
own purposes. However, please include attribution to the authors. You are also free to post a screen
shot of it to your web page.
The Plan
We have assembled the probability distribution for a single quantum state in a two dimensional
circular well as a separate file, named quantumCircle.wav.
We can use this file in the applet in a variety of ways:
Open the file and play it through a Java Sound audio object (like using the JOptionPane
to display and play sound files)
We’ll use the audio object to have the user click the phasors in the lower section. When they
click on the phasors, it will change the magnitude and phase of the probability distribution in
the circle, and the phase diagram will update.
Drawing:
As we know, drawing is the process of creating something on a computer screen, which is
sometimes called drawing something out. In this case, we want to draw the probability
distribution of a single quantum state in a two-dimensional circular well.
While we are inside the
CircularBoxAppletApplet, the Java class GraphicsApplet is defined. There is a line of code that
creates an image called “CircularBox.png”. Then, there is a line that creates an object of type
Graphics2D. The Graphics2D object is used to create an image using the image that we just
created.
One problem we face here is that this image must be a square. The probability distribution
formula we were given is for a circular well. The main way to solve this is to make the image a
rectangle and draw the probability distribution for a circular well. There are two ways to do
this:
