      Interview: Puck Buddies

      Q: Can you introduce yourself?

      I am Giraud Stevens from Canada, and currently in Grade 12. A self-taught game programmer and artist.

      Q: What is Puck Buddies, and how did you get started?

      I began working on Puck Buddies when my friends were doing a story and I thought I could help them out. Back then the game had a similar feel to Legend of Zelda.

      I played games like Mario Galaxy, New Super Mario Bros., and Braid, and wanted to try making a game with a similar aesthetic to those. I did not know the first thing about game development though. I did not know how to program or make levels.

      I began playing it and I thought it was fun, so I was like “Okay, I can do this!” I began making levels for it. I made a few prototypes then I found some guys who were very interested in the game and who told me what was wrong with my prototypes. They helped me fix it, and became the whole thing.

      That was around Springtime 2014, and we came out with the first version of the game at the end of 2015. I did not program more than a couple weeks in between.

      Q: What is the difference between the prototypes and the final game?

      The prototypes were really basic. The final game was a much better design.

      Q: How did your main competitor, Poxl, enter the market?

      I don’t really know. They first came out around the same time as I did.

      Q: How do you find inspiration for new puzzles?
