i don’t think i could make it through a movie like this if it wasn’t for the company of an audience that shares the same fascination with the details of history. you can’t see too much of this in a movie theater because i think people are generally more comfortable listening to the main plot than talking about obscure matters of historical accuracy.

netflix’s oz, which is available in both sd and hd versions, requires two days of downloading. the full movie is then available to stream for 24 hours. i recently watched the avengers as an experiment with this feature. this is one of those movies that’s just as good, if not better, in hd as it is in sd, so i spent two days on a sluggish dsl line downloading it. i couldn’t even get through half of the film before my broadband network collapsed. by that time, i had enough material stored on my hard drive to watch the entire film, and that’s how it worked out for me. i did have a couple of moments when i was concerned that netflix’s hd content might be less than perfect, but i was never able to find any technical problems. i’m not sure how many people are going to actually watch the hd version of oz, but i think it’s a mistake not to offer it. i think we’re all going to be able to see more of this film in hd than in sd, and netflix is more likely to have this content available when it will be useful.
