umar ibn al-khattab was the second caliph of islam, and he played a very important role in the history of islam. in 684 ce, umar started the first islamic state constitution, known as the constitution of medina, which was written by abu bakr and umar. this constitution was a document that established the basic principles of the state. umar had sworn allegiance to uthman as the third caliph, but soon after the latter was assassinated, ali had him declared the fourth caliph of islam, and it was through this act that ali became the caliph. he ruled over the muslims for twelve years (684-705 ce), until he was removed from office by mu’awiya. in this time, he led the muslims to victories over the byzantine empire, and he also completed the conquest of north africa.

muhammad and his followers were forced to live in medina after 622 ce, in order to escape persecution from the khawarij, a sect of muslims who were afraid that the prophet would lead them in a polytheistic direction. the khawarij had rejected the prophet’s claims to prophethood and opposed his call for an islamic monotheism. for the rest of his life, the prophet resided in medina, where fatimah remained with him. her third son and muhammad’s grandson, hussein, was killed in 680 ce during the battle of karbala, in which the shia muslims lost.

the legacy of fatimah is to be found not only in the way that she lived as a wife and mother, but in the way that she was a devoted follower of her husband muhammad, who was a man of great integrity, honesty, and morality. following his death, fatimah went through a difficult period, as she was the first woman to gain control of the ummah (community) of islam. as a result, fatimah gained a great deal of respect from muslims, both men and women, and she was given the title umm al-qur’an (the mother of the qur’an). the word ummah means ‘the community,’ and the ummah is made up of muslims who believe in the oneness of god, the prophet, and islam. in this way, her status as the mother of islam was established.
