WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge on Monday rejected Michael Flynn’s request to withdraw his guilty plea on charges of lying to the FBI about his contacts with Russian officials.

U.S. District Court Judge Emmet Sullivan said that Flynn had failed to prove that a “fair and just reason” existed for his plea to be withdrawn.

Flynn, President Donald Trump’s first national security adviser, is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 18 after he was charged in a case filed under seal and brought by special counsel Robert Mueller.

Flynn, who has maintained that he is innocent, pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI last December. He also served as Trump’s campaign chairman.

Flynn and his lawyers had argued that he shouldn’t have to pay the price for a crime he didn’t commit. They contended that officials at the Justice Department and FBI coerced him into lying by misrepresenting the scope and seriousness of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
