the xxx series. what do we mean by that? we mean maybe you’ll create a sound that’s even better than xxx. a sound no one has ever heard before. because only cakewalk can do it. they’ve created an entire suite of plug-ins designed to help you unleash the xxx in your sounds. because xxx was made for you.

once sonar has been set up, it’s pretty easy to move quickly between the view menus to start writing a track. the sequencer area allows complex sequences of movements and chord changes to be recorded. the new score window is there to let you play through a performance, including the tricky bits. the piano part area allows you to play note sequences in any order without worrying about transposing. in addition, the piano part software can set and override the g, f and c chords and the associated notes. and, if you’re lucky, a gregarious solo piano player may be waiting for a gig in your studio.

the audio tools are designed for audio content and so are scaled up to reflect this. the audio mixer is a standard mixer, with control over input, output, monitoring and volume. there are two useful stereo strips.the batch mode allows you to stream the content of several projects into the mixer at the same time, or you can record this content into the current project at the same time as the audiomonitoring is performed. audiosnap makes it fast and easy to adjust the timing of the audio without having to measure.

the very best feature of sonar x3 producer edition is melodyne. this is a pitch correction tool with fully editable parameter controls. in addition to automated or edit-based pitch-correction, the melodyne editor offers five major pitch-correction steps. beginners will find the most useful is the auto-correction and latching features. those who use pitch-correction will appreciate the full series of parameter adjustments. although some of the tools can be difficult for novice users, the interface is intuitive and the controls are well labelled. a tutorial accompanies the application and can be found in the help menu. this tutorial explains the overall processing approach taken by melodyne and also explains the five steps in detail. there is a fantastic training video in the help menu as well.

but, to be perfectly honest, all this will mean nothing unless you can start using it. it’s that simple. sonar ‘s limits are the limits of your hardware. while i’d like to see more changes to make working with and recording audio even more flexible, sonar is an incredibly well-rounded and complete package. it’s versatile and it’s powerful, and while there’s still a lot to do in the audio editing and mixing areas, i am always amazed at what you can do with it in the rest of your tracks.
as i said before, i’m not crazy about being forced to use the plug-in host that came with this release, as that’s only one application. sonar has had quite a bit of soul over the years, and it still has it now. i could go for a new, user-friendly version of the audiomunk plug-in, as well as some other new features. that might be nice, but like all of us, i’ll give it time and see how it goes.
perhaps the most compelling feature of sonar is that you can build complete multitimbral sets of plug-ins and loopers with a single purchase. sonar is also a fast and fluid piece of software, and it can be used just as well by anyone who has a few hours to devote to learning how to use it. the interface is very intuitive and sonar’s pre-sets are essentially a giant palette of presets. no matter how completely you mess up the software, you’ll get a massive collection of sounds out of the box.
