Back in late 2003, one of my brothers gave me a used PS2. Had to re-purpose an old box and attach/hook up all the cables. I just finished making the gamepad for my friend Andy and we had a practice session to see if the new pad worked. Worked like a charm. Didn’t final blow me away as much as Halo but it was close. The first game with the pad was Rime. I made this in South Korea around 2004 with the help of a friend who knows a lot about 3D modeling. I made the caves, towers and a few awkward parts, like the first opening cutscene. Controller needed to be updated to the new firmware. I never had a PS2 after that. When I got my new laptop I had to make a new copy of the game to transfer over.
This was the first game I ever did with the engine. I took Oskar’s suggestion and added a different version of the maze and the exploration mode. The later you try and find the mysterious cube, the harder it’ll be. Also plenty of optional items for passing the time and you can pick up a wish from the old man’s house if you feel like it. I think it’s still the best looking game I’ve ever made. You really need something on your screen to distract you when it is a small size, hah.
I created this game when I was 11 years old, and it was the only thing I’ve ever been proud of. I think I was trying to emulate The Legend of Zelda, but I couldn’t think of any ways to undo the death of Link’s shadow as he fell into the depths… So I used the shadows to trap and hunt him down. I quite liked it.
