When and if you decide to have casual sex, you have to figure out the health implications, or lack of, beforehand. “There are a lot of negative consequences of casual sex that it shouldn’t be encouraged,” says Rob Lappin, M.D., the medical director of the Good Doctor, the nation’s leading STD clinic.
Given that you’ll likely not go home with a partner and clean him or her or wash your clothes afterward, you’ll want to assume that it’s entirely possible to catch something going down. So what? HSTDs like chlamydia and gonorrhea don’t necessarily stay within the body, but many of the same consequences can occur.
The good news is that with any of the STDs out there, after sex, you can get tested — that way you can determine if you were exposed and become knowledgeable about what you’re dealing with. And you also get the choice of having the treatment. “The risk of negative consequences is way less when there’s a dialogue around STDs and sex,” says Rachel Silverman, M.D., a medical director at the Good Doctor and the author of The Sexy Years: A Woman’s Guide to Sex, Health, Love, and a Great Career. “You’ve actually built consent and aren’t just reacting out of the blue.”
While the casual sex culture has created an environment where people are growing up having sex at a younger age, “younger age” may not actually mean “younger years,” says Silverman. “We’re going through puberty, but it’s not just happening at that time. It’s happening more often, and that means there’s more exposure to it.”
One of the most important things you can do, says Silverman, is know what your sexual health status is and be proactive about it. The first place to start is with a regular STI screening, which you can do with a very low-cost or even free, and nonjudgmental, test — one of about 10 common STD tests. Testing once a year is a good standard for people in their 20s to 30s, she says, and even more often than that if you’re sexually active. You can also ensure that your partner is tested, and use protection during and after sex. “You could also use protection when you’re just going out, as protection is about taking care of your health, not just sex,” she says.
Silverman says that there’s no reason to feel ashamed about being sexually active. “Women

While we come here prepared for some obvious sexual conversation and/or topics, we certainly don’t want any episodes of awkwardness – and what makes us more nervous than talking about our sex lives, period? Allow us to share some common misconceptions about sex and dating in our culture.
If you’re a fan of the “Woman’s Right to Choose” catch phrase, you may be puzzled to learn that the official statement for Planned Parenthood is “Women’s Rights Are Human Rights”. The goal of the organization is not to say that every woman has a right to choose a fertility procedure, but rather that women have the right to make the choice (if it’s an informed, researched and medical necessity) that best suits them. While we come here prepared for some obvious sexual conversation and/or topics, we certainly don’t want any episodes of awkwardness – and what makes us more nervous than talking about our sex lives, period? A study by the Journal of Sex Research discovered that most people prefer to use condoms during sex than to use alcohol. In fact, a study by a U.S. Veteran Affairs Medical Center found that 81 percent of soldiers interviewed preferred condoms during sex than alcohol. Alcohol was considered to have both positive and negative effects in all soldiers. On the positive side, alcohol had potential to increase your feelings of love, happiness, intimacy and satisfaction, as well as your mood. On the negative side, drinking can also cause feelings of loneliness, frustration, jealousy and anger, and lead to negative mood. The study discovered that if a soldier caught an STI while using alcohol, they were twice as likely to use a condom than if they weren’t. As a result of the study, a suggestion was proposed to encourage condoms use during sex by changing what can be considered to be the sex-talk voice of how military people interact with other soldiers about sex.
