When and if you decide to have casual sex, you have to figure out the health implications, or lack of, beforehand. “There are a lot of negative consequences of casual sex that it shouldn’t be encouraged,” says Rob Lappin, M.D., the medical director of the Good Doctor, the nation’s leading STD clinic.
Given that you’ll likely not go home with a partner and clean him or her or wash your clothes afterward, you’ll want to assume that it’s entirely possible to catch something going down. So what? HSTDs like chlamydia and gonorrhea don’t necessarily stay within the body, but many of the same consequences can occur.
The good news is that with any of the STDs out there, after sex, you can get tested — that way you can determine if you were exposed and become knowledgeable about what you’re dealing with. And you also get the choice of having the treatment. “The risk of negative consequences is way less when there’s a dialogue around STDs and sex,” says Rachel Silverman, M.D., a medical director at the Good Doctor and the author of The Sexy Years: A Woman’s Guide to Sex, Health, Love, and a Great Career. “You’ve actually built consent and aren’t just reacting out of the blue.”
While the casual sex culture has created an environment where people are growing up having sex at a younger age, “younger age” may not actually mean “younger years,” says Silverman. “We’re going through puberty, but it’s not just happening at that time. It’s happening more often, and that means there’s more exposure to it.”
One of the most important things you can do, says Silverman, is know what your sexual health status is and be proactive about it. The first place to start is with a regular STI screening, which you can do with a very low-cost or even free, and nonjudgmental, test — one of about 10 common STD tests. Testing once a year is a good standard for people in their 20s to 30s, she says, and even more often than that if you’re sexually active. You can also ensure that your partner is tested, and use protection during and after sex. “You could also use protection when you’re just going out, as protection is about taking care of your health, not just sex,” she says.
