Three methods have been used to support the free distribution of fonts:
- Uploading the font to a third-party repository, such as Google or Mozilla.
- Embedding links to a version of the font in the original document itself.
- Including a data URI that points to the font’s file.
There have been repeated calls for improved interoperability between mainstream and alternative fonts. One problem has been the lack of an appropriate file format for sharing alternative font files. Another problem has been inadequate support for proprietary fonts. Only iOS and OS X seem to support alternative fonts natively (at least Safari and macOS). Most operating systems store font files in proprietary formats, or can’t work with the same font more than once, or are limited by a per-user cap. This leads to the need for font substitutions. So, both system fonts and alternative fonts need to open and read font files in a common and interoperable format.
The OFL requires that fonts be free software, so that anyone may modify, study, and share them. Without a license that recognizes this goal, alternatives may not be usable without expensive litigation. The OFL license lets the user modify the font to fit his or her needs, but make that possible.
Branching allows us to customize a font for use in a unique context where the quality of the original is not suitable, e.g. a little-used programming language.
There is a balance to be struck when choosing a license for a font. License compatibility is important, but we should not risk being sued if we are unable to release the font as free software. Different licenses address these concerns in different ways, so it is a matter of selecting the best license for the font in context.
