the united states marine corps (usmc) is the oldest and largest of the united states armed forces. originally a fleet of out-of-service us navy sailing vessels and coast guard cutters, the usmc was created by act of congress on 10 december 1798. the navy itself was established in 1794.
the marines were recreated in 1808, originally as a part of the united states army. they were an independent arm of the army until they were again placed under the united states navy in early 1903. in 1972, the usmc became an independent branch of the united states military, reporting directly to the secretary of the navy. the usmc is the only branch of the us armed forces that operates a distinct fighting force from the us army, navy, and air force. the marines are a formidable fighting force that has seen service in most major conflicts and major theaters throughout the world since 1798. one of the most distinguishing features of the marine corps is that it is the only branch of the u.s. armed forces that is specifically tasked to provide combat power ashore.

the ka-bar first appeared in the u.s. in 1952 at the request of the u. marine corps as a replacement for their prior standard issue knife, the m1911. initially, the ka-bar was based on the m1911, but quickly developed into a distinct design. the ka-bar was originally made in a variety of different sizes, but the most common sizes today are the 4.5 inch (114mm) and the 5.5 inch (140mm) models. it is true to the name, as the blade is curved in two dimensions with a slight inward curve (which is more pronounced on the 5.5 inch model) which allows the knife to be opened into a spear-like shape. on the back of the handle, the ka-bar is equipped with a lanyard hole for use as a lanyard when carrying the knife. the blade is made from extremely strong 440c stainless steel, a high carbon steel, and is not nitrogen-hardened, as the trend has been to do so with most military grade stainless steels. like most modern military and survival type knives, the ka-bar is made of either 440c or 420j2 stainless steel, or a combination of the two. the ka-bar is just a bit thicker than the fairbairn-sykes, with the top of the handle back at the handlebar. the ka-bar uses a full tang, which is just like a fairbairn-sykes, but is much more robust and strong.
