Secure Boot is a technology that adds a type of cryptographic boot verification that aims to prevent the loading of unsigned code on a PC. Secure Boot cannot be disabled via a BIOS update or operating system. It is a recent development and one that is slowly being integrated in to Windows Operating Systems. It is designed to protect against attack by malicious software. This protection is needed for Windows operating systems to run the majority of the software currently available on the PC market. The adoption of Secure Boot has the following requirements:
o A PC must be configured to allow Secure Boot to be enabled during system startup.
o The PC must be updated with the latest service pack and be rebooted into Safe mode.
o The appropriate boot loader (Grub) must be installed on your installation medium (such as a USB drive).
o The bootloader should be configured to allow UEFI/Secure Boot to be enabled by default.
o The bootloader should be the last stage that is allowed to load before the operating system is loaded.
o The UEFI/Secure Boot signature level must be set to the appropriate level. This can be done by installing it to EFI/Microsoft/Boot/BootMST.efi

On an Intel platform, Secure Boot is enabled by default. However, AMD machines also have the option of enabling Secure Boot if the BIOS is set to that option during system startup.
Secure Boot and UEFI are different technologies and should not be confused with one another.

The Secure Boot Enterprise Policy is the governing body for Secure Boot on Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012. Version 1.1.4.107 of the Policy is available for download.
