The Sega Naomi was an arcade/console hybrid. It had different features from the original Dreamcast. It had no built-in CD-ROM but rather had a removable block on its backside, containing a Sony DVD-ROM unit. Later Naomi consoles released and were backwards compatible with the Dreamcast.

Some games were still released on the original Dreamcast, such as Sega GT, Sega Force, Virtua Fighter 4, Virtua Racing, Visual Soccer 2 and many others. Sega would release new titles only for Naomi, such as ATV Offroad Fury, Sega NAOMI Stadium and Basketball. A small selection can be found at Sega Console QX Arcade Games, but they’re pretty rare.

In 2004, the Naomi was discontinued. It was superseded by the console’s successor Sega NAOMI 2. The Naomi was initially released under the name Sega Pico (Pico is a Latin word for small) and the Pico was officially rebranded as the Naomi.^[47]

In 2005, Sega released a remake of the Naomi arcade called Sega Naomi AA, which is essentially an upgraded Model 3, although the changes are very slight. The software is identical to the original arcade version and adding any game or slot will unlock the same features as the original arcade machine. It retails for over $400 on the e-Bay marketplace, which is almost an entire console’s list price at the time of its release.^[48]
