Donald Fagen The Nightfly Remastered Flac
Alive In America, The Nightfly and Kamikiriad are an encyclopedic combination of all things Fagen. One listen to any one of the albums and it sounds like its on par with the best of the best. And while the live album is excellent and the live side of the double-disc set (The Nightfly Live) is as equally excellent, Kamikiriad is the one thats really a must for anyone who has not already familiarized themselves with Fagens work. Those that have, though, will find little or nothing of which to complain.
To its credit, there is only one moment in each of the MVI discs when you can feel theyre not taking an entirely uncompressed route with its PCM compression. Its on The Nightfly Live, where one of the horns plays something approaching a fart note, which sounds like it might be the last gasp of the engineers to keep the performance from sounding like a cheap demo. As far as the MVI discs themselves, thats a minor nit, and shows that the audio engineers werent fooling around.
One listen to the MVI discs and it becomes clear that Fagen created the music with an ear to cinema. This time, he assembled three of his best in a set that puts his previous three albums on their feet, offering the only new material since Kamikiriad in the bonus disc that brings together a half hour of demo material and the ten previously unpublished bonus tracks (on The Nightfly Trilogy).
The Nightfly Trilogy is clearly a collection of Fagens most personal work. Tracks like “A Couple Of Times A Year” and “Will Wheaton” show he is capable of writing fast and funny songs. “Universe” is less a song and more a suite of melody, and the joy in the music is his ability to deliver punchlines with a sense of humour as he does in the lyrics. “Write A Song With Only Me” tackles the issue of men in general in a way that is in a different class from most songs.
