DISM Decrypt ESD TO ISO
I’m now at the TPM Error when mounting encrypted disk and need to exit to a dism.exe window to interact with the decryption functionality. A Windows dism.exe will automatically add a 32-character initial password for the encryption process. Upon entering the initial password the next window requests the passphrase for the disk encryption. Enter the passphrase, or request it from the location that the [MakePassphrase.ps1] script can be found.
If I haven’t locked the VM down with a strong password, I can just go through the process of getting the passphrase and then I can successfully unlock the disk. And I suppose I can take my time getting the passphrase if I want to so I went ahead and did that. I know I haven’t done the correct path, since I’m following a Microsoft PowerShell book (Neal Immervoll’s Auth module ) and trying to add a solid understanding to how certain things work. If you aren’t running in an Admin account, you can get a strong password by running pwd /Encrypt and pwd /decrypt.
For example, if you define t = 1, then Clevis will provide you the decryption key with the least number of parts, and if it does not do so, it will print an error. Alternatively, you can define t = 2, in which Clevis will print an error message if a deployment is not fully decrypted.
To perform the decryption, use the command dism decrypt-esd E:\Windows.WIM, where E:\Windows.WIM is the path to the image file; dism and decrypt-esd being the DISM and CryptDecrypt tools. Do not use the command dism decrypt E:\Windows.WIM to decrypt the.esd or.wim files. The command dism <operation>-esd <file> you provide does not work as expected.
Here I decided to swap out the Floppy Disk I was decrypting the game from with a USB Hard Drive. This is recommended over the use of a Floppy Disk if you have an USB 3.0 port available for your laptop.
I figured I’d stick with my first disk, and I had a lot of fun with it. Anyone who’s done this before knows what’s in store, but it’s a good puzzle that takes some time to complete. I’d recommend that people also check out Operation Chaos’s video tutorial , which contains fairly detailed instructions for decrypting the Floppy Disk. The most important part is the PGP bootloader, which can be decrypted from the BOCW level to the title.
I should mention that I forgot to jump through the sequence of decryption at the end and I found the floppy disk had already been encrypted. However, I still managed to complete the mission, so I figured I’d just add this info for future reference.
I found the decryption sequence in my Floppy Disk to be pretty easy to follow, and I thought it was cool that it’s a challenge that took a lot of work to complete. There are some cool Easter eggs in the floppy disk, but we’ll add the information for those below.
The only problem with the above code is that it changes the size of the drive from 0 to the partition size. To fix this, we need to change the variable $driveSize = $blk.Size to $driveSize = $blk.Size – 1 instead of $driveSize = $blk.Size. This now results in the ESD decryption tool generating a new volume size for the disk.
After adding the GUID to the new disk’s name, the disk is found by the script when the disk is decrypted. Then the disk is renamed to its original name. The original disk name can be displayed by using the Get-AzDisk cmdlet. The new disk name can be displayed by using the Get-AzDisk cmdlet. The new disk name can then be referred to as the original disk’s name. This is the name that will show up in the VM. To rename the disk, we use the Set-AzDisk cmdlet.
