First, it’s important to know exactly why you want to experiment with casual sex. Several of our respondents couldn’t get over their hesitance to engage in casual sex, but they were willing to talk in-depth about why they weren’t prepared to do it. For example, when we asked one respondent why she was willing to try casual sex, she told us, “I’ve been having trouble on and off in my life coping with my (high-conflict, codependent) mother and a tough family upbringing. I’m at the point in my life where I have a lot of self-worth issues about where I stand, what I’m worth in the world. I believe that I’m worth having sex, and I need to show my partner that they are, too.”
It is important to be aware that casual sex is a vulnerable relationship — it’s generally safe only if you respect each other as much as you respect yourself. If you go to bed with someone you don’t know, you’re totally dependent on that person. If you do casual sex with someone you don’t trust, you may end up emotionally getting hurt when they don’t give you what you want.

If you don’t feel comfortable having casual sex with somebody new, your reluctance probably has less to do with what’s going on with you and more to do with the fact that you’re having a hard time with trust or wanting to trust someone.
