CurveFitting is a Java based application designed to fit a curve, given by several
points, by a cubic Spline, a Polynomal or a Fourier-series. It is written in Java and
integrates into the Java-JRE/JDK distribution or on its own.

CurveFitting is available as a free download. The.jar file is copied into your
JRE/JDK distribution.
Usage:

This application works like “more or less” all other Java-based applications. To
use it, simply launch it from a shell or an Explorer window:
java -jar..\CurveFitting.jar
or
java -Xmx512m -cp..\CurveFitting.jar:lib/classes org.scjava.util.DefaultParameters.CurveFitting
The main window shows a representation of the whole curve to be fitted. To add
points, press the “+” button. Points are added one at the time, they are all
simultaneously saved. This application uses its own configuration file. You can
specify an unlimited number of parameters, which is a list of integers. Parameters
are added in the order specified. The parameters must be given in pairs: name and
value, for example:
parameter1 = 2
parameter2 = 2
The first parameter is the name of the parameter and the second is the value.
The left border of the diagram is a scale, defined by a number of points. The
number of points is limited to 1 million. Each point is saved individually. When
all points are saved, it is possible to see a graph representation of the curve
fit (if a plotting function was chosen when adding points). The default value is
-1 for the maximum number of points to be saved (if the parameter is not specified).
Saving the points can be stopped by pressing the “Cancel” button or by pressing
the “Close” button in the main window.

When the program finishes, the best fit is printed in the main window. A log file
can be specified using the “-logfile” command line parameter. It is a file name
relative to the current working directory, where the data file is stored.

CurveFitting is a graphical Java application. It has a simple interface, and you can just enter your data points and press the “OK” button to get the fitted curve.
Spline (spline or splineFitting):
If you have a set of NxN points, then curveFitting uses the NxN points to compute the best-fitting 2nd order spline (no knots).
If you want to fit a spline with a different number of knots, use the optional Knots (knotsFitting) property.
CurveFitting will try to fit a spline with the following properties to a set of points:
– the spline must have N + 4 knots (two points are identified as N=0, meaning that the fitting procedure has started without the points).
– the number of points used for the fitting must be at least three.
Note that CurveFitting considers the points given in the order they are given.
If the data contains duplicate points, CurveFitting will fit the duplicate points of the same data set, as well as the points of the data set that are not duplicates.
CurveFitting assumes that the points to be fitted are ordered in ascending x-direction, and the same is true for y-direction.
Polynomial (polynomialFitting):
If you give a value for the degree, then CurveFitting will compute the best-fitting polynomial of the given degree to the points.
Note that CurveFitting assumes that the points to be fitted are ordered in ascending x-direction, and the same is true for y-direction.
