Tensile test is used to identify the mechanical properties of the steel beams used in the construction of piles. For the mechanical properties investigation of the reinforcement bar, a universal testing machine is used. The universal testing machine adopts the Instron Mark 10 capable of loading speeds from 0.1 m/s to 50 m/s with 100,000 kN or 20 kN continuous load cell.
In the presented work, a high-speed camera named Phantom v6.11 (Vision Research Inc.) is used to observe the propagation of the cracks under a pulsed electromagnetic field. This high-speed camera has a frame rate of 200,000 FPS and a resolution of 2592 × 1944 pixels. A two-dimensional electrical impedance tomography (2D-EIT) is applied in the present case to measure the time-varying electric conductivity distribution in the whole steel specimen. In this study, the concrete is used as an effective medium [ 28 ]. For the experimental set-up, a cylindrical specimen with a height of 5 cm and a diameter of 30 cm is used, and the load is applied vertically at the center of the specimen. The electric pulse induced by the excitation coil runs from one side to the other side of the specimen, and the detection coil is placed at the side opposite to the excitation coil. The coils used for the electric pulse and the detection coil are brass, and their values are shown in Table 3.
It is worth to mention, that the previous description has been done for magnetic induction method, where the magnetic induction phenomenon is used for the investigation of cracks. However, the method is suitable for almost all measuring methods, where a measurement of the current flow in the material is needed. The measurement of eddy current changes is the most important source of errors in this method and therefore it is necessary to use very accurate data acquisition system and an efficient data processing. In this technique, the thermal characteristics (changes in temperature, the thermographic images) are also of importance.
In general, the eddy current testing is operated with the specimen in the free state, under the condition of displacement and uniform temperature distribution. The temperature of the material in which the eddy currents are generated, is fixed. This temperature is determined by the material (the thermocouple). To locate the temperature, a temperature-sensitive resistor has been used. The temperature of the specimen is measured and kept at this value by the controller. The highest value of the specimen temperature in comparison with the ambient temperature determines the difference of the voltage to be measured. From this, the current flow can be calculated. If the temperature distribution in the specimen is known, the current density can be calculated, from which the depth of the crack can be determined. Based on the fact that all eddy current losses are proportional to the resistance of the material, the resistance of the material can be determined, based on the knowledge of the current density [ 3 ].
