Civil War: 1861 is a game of WW1 simulation and can be played from the point of view of either the Union or Confederate, as these forces engage in a series of battles as they try to control the entire American continent.
Each side has a number of unique units which can be assigned to your entire army allowing you to customise your force to your own taste.
In 1861 the two sides are made up of veteran soldiers, too raw for their own good, but with some potential nonetheless. This is where you come in. Victory will come from your tactical ability and your ability to inspire your men to make decisive efforts.
Civil War 1861 comprises 5 unique missions, 3 tutorial campaigns and a bonus campaign.

***TUTORIALS***
Civil War has a series of tutorials to assist new players to learn how to play the game.
Each mission has a brief tutorial explaining the unit selection, special abilities, movement and combat. These tutorials are inter-connected, so selecting a new unit will automatically cause a tutorial to load.
Tutorials can be turned off or on at any time.
Strategies and Tactics
Civil War has a number of unique’strategic’ and ‘tactical’ commands in use.
‘Hold this position until reinforcements arrive’ is just one of many units of artillery.
In the ‘Tactical’ menu, the player can ‘Turn support back to the main force’, ‘March’, or ‘Turn the main force back to this position’.
Veteran and raw units now have special abilities which can be useful in certain situations.

Events

General-in-Chief, Charles A. Dana, in the pages of the New York Tribune, on September 12, 1860, outlined the strategy of the up-and-coming General Nathaniel Banks, who intended to carry the war to the western border of the Confederacy, invading Virginia and Maryland, upon which Lincoln had warned during his nomination, and there being an approximation to a state of war, he intended to call out the troops in each one of those states and thus fulfill his duty to force a solution to the issue.

General Pierre G. T. Beauregard of South Carolina, on October 7, 1860, sent a letter from Richmond to General-in-Chief Charles A. Dana, offering to meet General Banks, and thus enable them to discuss the issue in a diplomatic manner, in the hope of resolving the issue in a proper way, not allowing the war to continue on.

Throughout the month of October, 1860, General Lyon was dispatched by President Davis to the occupied territory of the United States in his efforts to raise troops from the border towns that formed the frontier for the border states. They included Belmont, Plattsburg, and others, and for the entire month of October, General Lyon was able to raise over twelve thousand men, then occupy and occupy the Potomac River battery, holding it for two months, even successfully fighting a naval battle.

McPherson’s forces, however, were not authorized and not supported by the Confederate leadership, as they burned and looted Baltimore. See also I Chronicles, xx, 34, 35.
