Roblox was created in 2006 by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel. Baszucki had been involved with digital media for a couple of years, and Cassel had experience with educational websites and video games. In April 2004, Baszucki and Cassel came up with the idea for Roblox, a game created on a web platform where players can create virtual toys, characters, and other in-game items. The program was released on April 3, 2006, as an 8-megabyte download that first required the Windows operating system. At the time of its initial release, Roblox was among the first major consumer web services to work with Lua, a functional, object-oriented programming language that Cassel had developed with his previous company, Epyx.
The website was developed by a small team that worked around the clock and was supported solely by advertising revenue. Roblox’s first test release was the game Takeover. Originally, Baszucki and Cassel wanted to keep the game free to play with ads. Their reasoning was based on the fact that some users might be going to the site only for a few seconds, whereas others would use it multiple times a day. Roblox’s developers wanted to take advantage of that fact, but then decided against it because they thought it would be too much of a burden for the servers. After about three months of operation, the two founders quit their jobs to work full-time on the website.
Baszucki and Cassel built Roblox with the intent to be a tool for developers to create games and other kinds of content. It was designed to be modular, so it could be customized to accommodate any type of game, much like the game programming languages Unity and Unreal. Roblox was created to allow users to upload new versions of those game scripting tools and use them to make their own content. With Roblox, users could also create their own characters and create their own virtual worlds. Roblox’s robust scripting system allowed users to build their own games by customizing the appearance of the objects in the game. The website supported a market model in which items could be sold to other users. The only limits the system placed on content were the rules laid out by the Roblox Terms of Service.
The success of Roblox prompted the two creators to develop a separate website aimed at children, called Bloxter. On October 6, 2014, they relaunched
