why is she driving the cab anyway? the one semi-interesting moment comes when abhi has a crisis of conscience about his apparent future. bindu tells him shes in college, a fact she has long forgotten. abhi explains that she doesnt care about college, and that she doesnt have the right to bring a child into the world. bindu counters that they have already done it, and that makes it “theirs.” but we do not find out what she means. why are they still talking about this? its a tiny moment, and a few seconds too long, that may have occurred to our hero as he puts her back in her taxi. its not that any of the rest of the movie is bad, but that its so restrained. this film has all of the potential for a farcical, ridiculous romp, and it should dare to be more. but it lacks the guts to go anywhere dramatic or surprising. it skates along the surface instead.

this can be said for most of the film, too. the idea of pure, genuine affection is fine, and most people in a relationship know that they have it, even if they arent yet sure where it takes them. the movie gives them a look at the tracks that could go either way, and, like a japanese therapist, it lets them steer their own course, of which the audience will always have a perspective. this could have worked with a more self-aware script. instead, it tries a couple variations on the same cliché.

the first variation is the whole moll lady/heroine/comedienne parallel. bindu the moll is an exotic challenge for abhi, whose unmoored sensibility has never felt different from most teenage boys. the revelation in his sixth month is that no one is a stranger to him, and thats the point that leads to the crisis. this character is too one-dimensional, and, worse, too familiar. take away the fact that she doesnt understand abhi, and you could fill in her with any self-absorbed moll. in a slightly less crippling way, she is loosely based on guju (anushka sharma) and her sister kajal (gurpreet ghuggi) in omkara.

she s a power player not just because she leads the family but also because of her flawless looks. as one of the men in the film comments, shilpa is probably a 100 crore guy. she is clear to those around her what to do and what not to do. her performance is a vision. she doesnt create any conflict or mystery. she doesnt make bobby like her at all. she only lets him observe her character. she makes no mistakes. she doesnt give her impressions. she is a simply flawless, innocent, coquettish and beautiful woman, who manipulates bobby with ease.
bobby does start liking her. but before he falls for her, she sees the potential in bobby. she lets him know how powerful he could be as an investment banker. she compliments his professionalism and professionalism. she tells him that she wants a long-term relationship. she wants to be together. she handles bobby all the way till he falls for her. then, she lets him know that the relationship is over. she finds him boring. then she lets him know that she never liked him in the first place.
any romantic comedy will lead a microcosm of audiences to wish, nay, demand that the characters get together. the trouble with meri pyaari bindu is that it tries to offer up more and more reasons for bindu and abhi to do so. not just bindu, who, its easy to forgive, but also abhi, who suddenly becomes a love-struck puppy dog. (and, yes, he still makes the movie more entertaining. he cant help himself.) at one point, he even offers to settle for not-quite-love if bindu will give him a peek at her thoughts in a big scene. (it isnt in the script, but i swear.)
