ShaderMark 2.0 also uses the new Programmable Pixel Shader, which was the all-new feature introduced in the NV3x chips. ATI claims this feature allows the Radeon 9800 XT (and any other NV3x card) to do pixel shader calculations that are 1.5 times faster than the 9800 XT. This doesnt seem to be true. The 9800 XT can do 2x the pixel shader calculations of the 9800 XT in this test.

The ATI Radeon 9800 XT seems to have a narrower color band with its 16-bit pixel shaders than the 9800 Pro. The Pro cant eek out any additional colors above 75 in this test. The 9800 XT can do these calculations with nearly 100% precision.

It wasnt an hour ago that I wrote, after seeing the leaked drivers, that ATI had probably deployed some sort of software switch that further disables the pixel shaders on the 9800 XT. However, a month-long campaign by ATI to spin this card into a heroic (albeit inaccurate) underdog has left a lot of folks a little too anxious to accept this reality. So we are going to sort this out. I would like to apologize to any NV3x owners who have taken a shot at me personally by sending me messages for trying to knock the bad ATI card. I would like to apologize to the fans of the 9800 XT who were given a false sense of security about that card. I believe in your product. You know this isnt true. The 9800 XT has useful aspects, even if it needs shader speed tweaks. Most of you would agree that PPS should be used sparingly, and that texturing doesnt have to be done on the CPU to be processed faster. There are great aspects to the 9800 XT. Hopefully, we will discuss these aspects after next week, when we actually publish the 9800 XT review.

The Pixel Shader 30 feature is a part of the AMD Stream processor implementation and is integrated in all of the video cards that support this feature. [18] It provides two new shader registers for independent programmable shading at a pixel level and allows the hardware programmable pipeline to draw two vertices using a single push of the V-stages. This means that each programmable vertex processor is set to two programs, allowing each pixel (one for each programmable vertex processor) to draw a quad. Since ATI acquired ATI inc. that company has expanded their hardware support of pixel shaders.
The driver is available on AMD’s web site but only as a beta release. [19] The default version is 1.2.0 RC4, and it can be downloaded and installed by following the instructions on the site. [20]
A bug in ATI Stream-specific hardware management means that Xorg’s radeon driver falls back to the Mesa driver in its initial Xorg sessions. To get around this, the user needs to logout of Xorg and back in. [21]

The chipmaker launched its next-generation high-end graphics processor code-named “Pitcairn” in a carpet-bombshell event that also knocked out its older Radeon X1000 series architecture. AMD launched its next-generation Radeon X1150 graphics processor, code-named “Pitcairn” alongside the new Radeon X1200s at a December 17, 2006 press event in San Jose, California. The new Radeon X1200 architecture sports a 32-bit 512-bit memory interface. The X1200 also features 64-bit general purpose registers and an improved pixel pipeline. AMD claims that the X1200 has twice the performance of its previous-generation Radeon X800 Series of graphics chips (which features a 128-bit memory interface). ATI Technologies, the chipmaker’s graphics unit, engineered and produced the ATI RADEON X1250, X1250 Pro, X1255 Pro, X1270, X1270 Pro, X1275, X1275 Pro, X1280, X1280 Pro, X1290, X1300, X1350, X1350 Pro, X1370, X1375, X1375 Pro, X1380, X1380 Pro, X1390 and X1400 chips.
