the avh-w4500nex has a 10.1-inch capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 1,280 x 720, which is sharp and easy to see. the screen has a particular beveled edge that makes it stand out, and there are a couple of small, soft-touch areas to help you grip the unit. the screen also feels nice and solid; it will take a lot of abuse. the pinch-to-zoom worked well, and the capacitive touch controls, including the ones for navigating and manipulating media, worked as expected. there are physical volume and source buttons on the top of the unit, and front- and rear-mounted buttons for accessing your device and its apps. the buttons respond well to your touch; theyre quite tactile but not overly bumpy.
in addition to standard bluetooth, audio, and phone connections, the aps 30 also supports hdmi, vga, and the optional digital audio system (das) inputs. this lets you connect a digital radio, a display, and more in the car. the das input is a unique feature that lets you connect to a second stereo (either the same one as your integrated navigation system or a separate one) for more spatial sound and better bass.
it offers a comprehensive suite of features, including voice control, voice navigation, and remote start functions. another plus is its large, capacitive multitouch display, which you can customize with an app available through the google play store. the only real negative is that the navigation information isn’t as detailed as we’ve seen on some more expensive systems.
our double amp evaluation included a pioneer avh-xd500bt that has a built-in 6.5-inch touchscreen with integrated navigation and a cd player, as well as a pioneer avh-xd500btw with a 6.5-inch lcd display and usb port for additional inputs. the first model has a main display with capacitive touch, and the second model has a conventional knob-based touch interface. both offer gps navigation and the ability to download a new map. we found the navigation controls on both models to be intuitive and easy to use, and the updated maps from the manufacturer were good.
