recent research has shown that pc application compatibility problems that are reported by users are often caused by installer or upgrade problems. to more effectively respond to those problems, we need to detect those situations early, and be able to troubleshoot them. a majority of the issues that are found by the compatibility testing team are detected in subsequent post-installation (post-installation issue/package (pi_pkg) exploration) and/or upgrade testing. therefore, we track and report post-installation testing using the pi_pkg testing matrix.

the idea is that if you include non-critical components in the installer, then the installer will have to resolve more issues during installation and upgrade. therefore, we want to have a good mix of installer and upgrade tests for a given test matrix.

the testing matrix enables the compatibility testing team to be able to triage a large number of issues on a monthly basis. we collect the results into a series of tables, and use those reports to communicate to the entire team the value of each post-installation test and the type of issues that are present.

what this means in practice is that when you disable uac, it completely “turns off” the uac popup prompt. there’s no way to selectively disable uac for certain files and programs. this is because the uac isn’t actually controlling windows; rather, it’s a security-enhancement tool that comes pre-installed with vista. the reason behind its presence is to ensure that users can’t accidentally uninstall critical system components or run applications with administrative privileges. when it’s disabled, the uac just doesn’t come up, regardless of whether the applications you want to run have been flagged to allow administrative privilege.
