the game features a total of 16 units, ranging from cavalry and light infantry to artillery and the most powerful, heavily armored, unit, the tank. there are also numerous types of building, including farms, forges, and mills. all of these buildings are represented as structures that the player can construct on the campaign map. as mentioned earlier, the campaign map is reminiscent of that found inage of empires. it is a grid, with each square representing one acre of land. the resource table is also the same as that found in theage of empiresseries. however, this time around, the resource table is a much more complex and detailed affair. america‘s resource system is quite unique. the trees, grass, and a variety of other terrain features all produce different resources. in fact, you can harvest trees and grass a number of times (based on the difficulty setting), thereby increasing the yield of each resource. most of the resources are also harvested on a regular basis. the game provides the player with a notepad, which keeps track of the progress of each resource. the player can only harvest resources on the campaign map. the units harvest resources for their own use (e.g. a tank requires fuel to run).

combat in americais not exceptionally complex, but it does require some attention. the ai is fairly simple and it’s possible to simply stack units on top of each other and overwhelm your opponent’s defenses. while this is a strategy that might work in the early game, it’s not advisable in the long term as the more powerful units do much better against the weaker opponents. hence, it’s important to be wary of how you are positioning your units and when your opponent will be best suited to take advantage of your weaknesses.

there are four campaigns to choose from: american civil war, mexican revolution, mexican revolution ii and mexican revolution iii. in each of these campaigns, you play as the winning faction for each stage of the game. the civil war is the shortest of the four and the mexican revolution campaigns are the longest. the mexican revolution campaigns can be played either alone or in multiplayer.
for the most part, gameplay inamerica is straightforward and easy to learn. i had no trouble completing the mexican revolution campaigns in the first few days, although i did have a few minor issues with the ai on a couple of the missions. fortunately, the developers have included a few hints to help you get through these missions if you encounter any problems.
the native americans, who are in the most danger of all, are the first nation that the player encounters in the game. in the opening sequence, the player is told of the “evil eye” of the sioux tribe and of their penchant for blood sacrifice, resulting in a quest to exterminate the sioux. this is where the out-and-out conquest and savage tribalism begins.
gameplay in the native american campaign is divided into four chapters, each of which allows the player to choose one of four tribes of the sioux. the four tribes are the lakota, the osage, the comanche, and the cheyenne. each tribe has specific strengths and weaknesses, and the player is given the opportunity to explore the wild west as each of these tribes. the first chapter has players build a fort to protect their community from the sioux tribes. the second chapter introduces the player to the structure of the lakota tribe. the third chapter takes place in the american south where the player is allowed to create a large military force to hunt down the sioux. the fourth chapter is the longest, taking place in the northwest territories of the united states. here, the player is able to build an immense military force with the hope of conquering the sioux. although the gameplay is a bit more complex, the sheer magnitude of the sioux is made apparent. and that’s the problem with the native american campaign. the sheer magnitude of the sioux is made apparent..
