yes, learning a lot of category theory is an important part of doing abstract algebra. however, the first time you encounter the notion of functor, you will have to make the connection between a functor and a natural transformation. i would say that you can’t really learn the categorical approach until you understand set theory.

lang’s book algebra, mentioned above, is an excellent read, but is also rather hard for students who are not used to working hard to master material. dummit and foote, mentioned above, is a very good text for algebra students. but i feel that it has the disadvantage of being too informal and too easy.

lang: i think lang is a great book, but it is probably hard to follow and lecture notes would be more useful. you could try the course notes from a year ago on the wiki. i think aluffi’s book is a good alternative. dummit and foote is fine (although dummit is more of a “sequence” book, not a “course”), but it is very old and it tends to lack exercises. i know that the course notes on the wiki have exercises.

alternatives: i have not read any textbooks from the prior 25 years, so i don’t know if there are any good alternatives. to some extent i am just recommending something that was a good course for me to take at this point in my career. for any course that covers the same material as in the last 25 years, you could probably just use the old course notes on the wiki. i believe we have, at least for the current generation of math majors, an adequate understanding of linear algebra that would cover the first two chapters of lang’s book. i believe we also have at least an adequate understanding of commutative algebra. for phd students who haven’t passed the algebra qr, if you want to emphasize abstract algebra, then i recommend math 420 (abstract linear algebra) or math 493-494. for most math majors i recommend math 412 (abstract algebra). for undergraduates, i recommend either math 420 (abstract linear algebra) or math 412 (abstract algebra).

Second Assignment DUE FIRST DAY OF CLASS: Read Lang Chapter I Section 11 (on categories and functors), and Chapter 2 Section 1 (on rings, this should be review). Also skim around the group chapter, as well as the first 7 chapters of Dummit and Foote: this should be mostly review. If not, take Math 493 instead.
Third Assignment DUE FIRST DAY OF CLASS: Read Lang Chapter 1 Section 1 (and maybe 2) if you haven’t before. This should be review. Dummit and Foote is not bad to read (and probably review), but you don’t need to be completely familiar with it before class. For example, Lang works with abelian groups from the beginning, but needs to get into more sophisticated finite group theory in Section 14. She doesn’t start dealing with modules until Section 9. The section on matrices starts in Section 8.
For most people, this is all very frustrating, and they will often just quit algebra. Fourth Assignment DUE WITHIN 30 DAYS OF CLASS: Take a look at Math 575, and Math 417-419 as options. Math 417-419 are very elementary, and Math 575 is not terrible: pretty rigorous, but definitely if you can do coursework in the abstract algebra course you want to take, take 575. In fact, some of Dummit and Foote is reprinted in many math books, so they are probably only your option if you are new to the course or the material. The course is the entire book, but if you get stuck on one section, you can reread the section in Lang. For an average graduate student, using Lang should not be difficult (although it is challenging for PhD students), and after class it is usually not too difficult to do 15-20. However, if you cannot do 15-20 in class, you will have to make do with that, and that will probably not be enough.
