But, it was more than just a commercial accomplishment. The Cure resonated with a large segment of the American public, considering its intensely heartwarming tone. The same year it came out, the world became familiar with the AIDs crisis, and, as everyone knows, this was no time to be complacent. Though the movie makes no attempt to explore the cultural and political dimensions of the AIDs crisis (for example, no one in the film says that drugs are ruining our youth or how Americans are failing to respect people of other nations), it is still a marked political statement.
Are you over 26? Get out. The CDC scientists (Emile Hirsch, Robert Carlyle, Marg Helgenberger, Alan Alda and Paul Michael Glaser) in this sci-fi flick make you worry about getting old, so just sit back and enjoy the ride. Director/writer Kenneth Hall turns a virus outbreak into a sci-fi drama that makes you feel all the effects of a deadly biological weapon. If you’re over 26, watch from the shadows with your friends. If you’re under 18, turn your computer off and forget you saw it. If you’re really over 26 and really smart, you’ll know not to watch this movie, so maybe you’ll come back around to another one.
A virus doesn’t just kill everyone who has it. It also makes them angry and violent. Quarantined in an abandoned freak show that once displayed living specimens of a host of rare and deadly diseases, the survivors of a biological attack now vie for power, all but one of them adding a new mutation in an attempt to make their weapon more deadly. They all love to argue, but their survival depends on their ability to compromise. In short, this virus could easily mutate and destroy all civilization, so the race to find a cure is a race against time — and its occupants.
The not-so-infectious diseases that cause the bad times are what make the movie so good. The film follows a group of people surviving in a special hospital quarantine area (first filmed in an abandoned circus in Paris) as they go through a “cure.” You get such joy from seeing the virus mutate its host, you almost want to shout at everyone to get it over with and die already. As a side benefit, you might find the relationship between the victim and the doctor revealing. (As of November 2006, the film is being shopped for distribution and is currently untitled).
The film has two potentially good subplots: first, that Jim’s dying friend has been on the heroin and can’t stop using the drug. He’s constantly crying out “help me, help me.” And two, Jim starts to understand the value of the drug at the end of the film. He’s saved by Neutron, who helps him go home to his dying friend in a skid row hospital to deliver the heroin. Jim becomes addicted to the drug, but his honesty about what he does for a living goes a long way in winning the love and respect of the drug-addicted Neutron. At the end, when Jim is dying and wonders what Neutron will do now that Jim is gone, Neutron says that he has another life now. The final scene is a nice, sometimes funny, sometimes moving addition to the story. There’s no question about it, The Cure is a good movie.
This cut of the original version of CURE includes extended scenes and alternate takes not included in the US theatrical release. It is Japanese with English subtitles. The cut is not easy to find. This is the first time we have ever released a Director’s Cut on this site. We sourced the film from an even older VHS copy. From the box it is obvious that this was a low-budget American release. There were no extras included. The front and back cover art was created by none other than famous artist H.R. Giger, who designed the Alien, John Carpenter’s They Live and, most famously, Ridley Scotts’ original Space-Thing.
