The Association of South African Universities on Wednesday announced a boycott of British universities until they end their policies of paying compensation to former lecturers who lose their jobs.

The organisation of university lecturers, which represents the 3,200 academics in South Africa, made the announcement at a meeting in Vanderbijlpark.

ASUM, however, believes the boycott is not compulsory.

The organisation argues that it is only an initial action aimed at forcing the British to review their policy on compensation for academics.

The organisation says it wants to save the jobs of more than 300 academics who are in danger of losing theirs.

“ASUM wants the British universities to immediately stop paying and compensating black academics at the same rate as white academics whose jobs are not only more secure, but also at least as well paid,” says Alex Kose, director of the organisation.

“We have a moral duty to these men and women to see that their jobs are saved.”

Kose tells GroundUp that to date, he is not aware of many cases where black academics have lost their jobs and been compensated on the same level as white lecturers in similar jobs.

He adds that the SABC recently aired footage on the “pernicious” British university policy on compensation, which he says is a way of encouraging only white applicants in “positions that are more difficult to fill, such as department chairs.”

“We want them to stop paying as it is an insult to black academics,” Kose says.

ASUM has been continuing to pressure the British to resolve the compensation issue since 2007.

Last year, the organisation worked with the Human Rights Commission of England and Wales to craft a new proposal, which would mean that universities in Britain would have to pay double compensation for black lecturers who lose their jobs, and five times the compensation for white lecturers.
