Jet injectors have also been introduced as a safer alternative for the delivery of analgesics (such as opioids) in emergency situations, through the administration of ‘jet-injection opioids’ (JIOs). The potential for smoother consumption of JIOs through needle-free administration has fuelled the growing popularity of opioid use worldwide. Because of an increased risk of overdose attributable to the concomitant use of the combination of opioids and acetaminophen, reduction of risk has become an important concern.

A few reports have described pilot studies of the potential of JIOs for delivery of other medications. In one study, a solution containing fentanyl (an opioid analgesic) and caffeine (a mild stimulant) was prepared, and delivered through a Monheims Jet Injector by bolus injection (40 micrograms per injection, consisting of fentanyl and caffeine delivered over 60 seconds). A single dose was able to maintain a safe level of plasma concentrations (2.5 times the minimum effective concentration) for over six hours40. Two pilot studies have reported on the safety of delivery of morphine by JIOs. One pilot study showed that analgesia was achieved in 92% of subjects following a 5-milligram bolus injection of morphine for pain relief41. The second pilot study found that lorazepam was well tolerated by healthy participants even at doses of lorazepam that would be expected to produce adverse events in patients42.

One pilot study has suggested that DCJIs can be used as analgesics (pain relief) for people with PDP, and that these jet-injections performed better on the performance-based primary end point of pain relief than did their needle-based counterparts, the injections using a needle and syringe43.

More recently, jet injectors have been used to deliver bupivacaine (‘The Monheims Xylocaine’) for use as a local anaesthetic in both dentistry and the medical setting. This has been widely adopted for anaesthesia following root canal therapy or for infiltration in dental therapies44,45.
