In February 2012, an anonymous group calling itself the Activation Working Group (AWG) cracked Windows 8 using two security flaws in Microsoft’s product activation system.[5] The group of eight computer hackers found a way to bypass Windows 8 Product Activation by using undocumented APIs to obtain keys from Windows. From one of the developers of the group, Eric Chien, “Using a combination of hacking and bribing, we were able to access the registry keys that contain the product key. With a little more digging and bribing, it led to finding Windows executable code of the product key validator. From here it was just a small Python script to extract the bytes of the key.”[6] As stated by Chien: “We would not be able to do this without this critical finding. Without this flaw, there would be no way to bypass product activation on Windows 8.”. Chien went on: “There probably won’t be any more groups disclosing the details of this publicly, but I am open to a few groups breaking it if they want to.”[7] In response, Microsoft released an official statement saying that “In an arbitrary, unscientific, and unprecedented step, Microsoft removed the protection of its Windows 8 activation process and left it unprotected, making it relatively easy for anyone to download an unauthorized digital copy of Windows 8.”. To be more precise, Microsoft said that in order to “prevent the circumvention of Windows 8 Digital Rights Management on any new device,” it has disabled the Windows 8 activation feature on all new PCs until the activation process can be deactivated on a given device or it can be deactivated with a product key. The company emphasized that it should be noted that “Microsoft has removed the Windows Product Activation protections from any new device, and is revoking the license code for any device where this protection has been removed. Device makers can then create their own activations as they see fit.”[8][4]

This makes a few things more complicated for manufacturers. In order to activate their purchased copies of Windows 8, users will have to deactivate Product Activation on the affected PCs. In other words, while the functionality of Windows 8 after it has been installed on a given PC remains unchanged, this means that if a user moves to another PC that possessed a different activation key, it will not be possible for that PC to boot from the installed copy of Windows.
