The active cat lives in the jungle of western Borneo. Extremely pure, unspoilt and free from harm, they feel at home amongst the trees. Hunting is a serious business for that population and very little is spent on basic welfare and conservation. Tigers are solitary animals, living in small family groups and keeping each other company. The habitat needs can be easily met as long as the animals are left in peace.
Habitat is limited and every patch of forest that can still provide for tigers with space and vegetation is under threat. Several smaller cities have been built close to the jungle and vehicles are now unavoidable, especially in the short rain season. The road that runs from the big city Sintang to the airport is one of the most dangerous routes. Whilst wildlife and nature for the average visitor is of little interest, jungle safari operators and camera travellers make money from the animals and the chance to be in a world of wild nature just a few steps away from a big city is alluring.
Rehabilitation of wild tigers is an extremely complicated project involving government, park authorities, hotel operators and many other parties. It’s daunting and time consuming and has only just begun at the site where Tiger Nature was filmed. Local authorities still have to make sure that it does not fall back into the hands of poachers and that the local economy is not put at risk.
The poor farmers’ plight is a complex one – on the one hand farmers feel personally threatened by tigers, can’t make a living on their forest land and they are resentful of the influence of tourism on their community. Tigers are often seen as a threat to their livestock and safety. On the other hand, the government is keen to keep developing the north west of Kalimantan, because of the high proportion of oil and gas in that region, but it too can’t be unaware of the negative effects of tourism.
Groups of wild tigers are starting to get used to people but they are still wary and prefer to stay in the jungle.
