The 1982 album is a portrayal of Baker playing for Chet Baker Trio alongside Dick Hyman and Eddie Gomez. On the top line, Trio is more lighthearted than on his later albums. For example, in the backing of The Hutch, Baker breaks down into a bluesy blues with some deep chords harmonically under-pinning the blues theme. The funky theme of Heaven on Earth is somewhat spoilt by the false ending. But Baker does get his best playing on the excellent orchestra of A Penny At A Time. Some of the other tracks bring out his best. Take the cheery Boogaloo, for example.

The album also shows Baker at his most passionate. In the imagination of his interpretations, he shows how he was still playing the blues at the heart of jazz and dance, but also explored other areas of music, like his gorgeous version of T. Rex’s Warrior Queen. He even gets to the heart of folk music, in the orchestral arrangement of Billy McLaughlin’s Chorale For The American Revolution.

Two new discs of music have been released by Paul Chet Baker, Chet Baker Trio: Live From the Moonlight (2CD) and Chet Baker Trio: Chet’s Afro (2CD). The first disc of Live From the Moonlight features the classic trio of Baker, Hyman and Gomez performing a concert at the Moonlight Jazz Club in New York City on February 2, 1982. They open with Baker’s instrumental, Distant Drums, which sets the mood for the album, delivering two tracks (a blues and a boogie-woogie) that stay close to the stylings of his earlier works.

The set is packed with tracks that demonstrate the group’s old-guard vibe, and Baker’s mastery of disparate musical styles. Chinga Senora, a song from a children’s opera recorded by the group for an Arista Records project years ago, is one of the most different tracks on the disc. The jaunty blues style is utterly atypical of a Chet Baker or Chet Baker Trio recording.
