Two years later, in July 2009, Konami released the Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Special Edition for the PS3. This version of the game includes all the DLC packs that were released in Japan, such as Snake vs. Cell, Snake vs. Monkey and Secret Theater, but as well includes a new Japanese-style boxart, a new title screen and the original Japanese voices. Both the Virtual Console and the PSP game also received a hardware upgrade, in which they are playing in 3D at 60 fps in 720p and 720p in 1080i, making them the first PS3 Virtual Console titles to play at 60 fps, and the PSP version of the game was also released on the PlayStation Store, followed by the PSP sequel Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops on July 29, 2010. Both of these ports are also in 3D, and, as with Metal Gear Solid 3 DS, support both left and right handed controls. All three versions of Gameshark codes are included in the package.
A free update to the PSP version of Metal Gear Solid 3 was released on November 1, 2009, which added the Snake Eater demo (only seen in aspect mode), French voices, a French-language intro sequence, the Snake Eater weapon camo (only available in War Song), a new interface with an achievement system (unlocked by beating all the data stages), and other minor additions. It also can be played with the PSP Eye Camera add-on on top of the screen, and the interface can be customized (move, invite, journal, audio, video, and screen). A GameRanger-compatible patch was made available separately.
The PSP and PS3 versions of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater also received an add-on titled Metal Gear Solid: Digital Solid Snake, released separately on the PlayStation Store on December 16, 2010 for the PSP, and November 18, 2011 for the PS3. It is a collection of eight short indie games developed by fans with the exclusion of Mud Story. The games are:
