A Brief History Of

Orlando’s Murder House

The words that might traditionally follow the phrase “murder house” are “vast” and “gruesome.” But not the one where 32 people died and the number could have been much higher had it not been for the efforts of two city women who saved it. In 1856, George Dickens, a prominent Orlando attorney, built his dream home on the east side of Lake Eola, now Circus Circus. It boasted high ceilings, grand marble fireplaces and a wrap-around porch. No expense was spared when trying to impress. Dickens lived there with his family and his mistress, Phoebe Yates, until he died in 1905.

When Phoebe married and moved to St. Louis, George Dickens left the house to her. After she died in 1925, she bequeathed the house to her niece, Etta Lassiter. Van Sverre and his family lived in the house until 1942, when Walter Jr. was called to active duty in the Navy. Walter Jr.’s wife was a patient in the psychiatric ward at Baptist Hospital and Van Sverre was looking for a housekeeper to help with the family. He found Cynthia Dunbar, a young woman with experience in nursing. By that time, Cynthia was married to LeRoy Dunbar, a musician. Dunbar’s friend, Florence Morris, was a former patient who had been helped to get a job.

Dunbar and Morris, who was pregnant with LeRoy’s child, moved into the Murder House and on July 27, 1942, the three of them were shot to death in their bed. The police speculated that Florence’s past from living
