Hardware acceleration could really be much faster than it ever has been. Even the latest CS4 beta was basically unusably slow on the same hardware due to the fact that the JavaScript engine never shut the hell up. That’s why I’ve been recommending to people to wait for Lightroom to hit the GPU in the next version, and for the same reason I’ll be recommending to people to wait for Lightroom CC too… Although, as far as I can tell, it’s basically the same engine that they’re going to use for all versions of the product. With that in mind, it’s really hard to imagine many reasons why it couldn’t be accelerated heavily.

It’s also rather odd that the JavaScript engine is going to remain from CS4 through the next version of Photoshop, even though JavaScript is basically irrelevant to graphics or DNG editing. I rather doubt that the big-name add-on makers will go for native Photoshop APIs into JavaScript, but maybe they should.

With the new features available for Photoshop, it will be very interesting to see how it actually performs when people who are used to Lightroom start to use the software. One of the main things that saved Lightroom from a total disaster is the ability to get out of it quickly. With CC, I can’t say whether that could happen or not. Of course, we’ll get a version that’s specifically for Photoshop CC, but I have to say that I’m still trying to figure out whether it’s meant to be used along with Photoshop or whether it’s supposed to be the new Lightroom. The newest version of LR has some features I hope will be useful. You laughed at the LR Academy Articles, but I think I should mention that they get better and better each time I visit! I’ve been pretty excited about the keywording and batch renaming features. I set up a simple batch batch and it’s backed up and easy to recall any time I need to batch rename. But I don’t think Lightroom 5 is quite ready for the wedding I’m working on. Oh, well. The time difference between import and export for the RAW files is outstanding! The new chunksize feature in the export dialog is both helpful and an answer to a question I didn’t think to ask: “What size do I need to back up my RAW files?” Since the exported files are poly-based, chunksize is simply the number of megapixels required to hold one piece. The nice thing about the poly-based file format is, since the firmware can remove whatever is in excess, the system will work well with whatever size NVR you use in your house. Since I’m using a Canon NVR, which has a 32GB drive, 600MB is an enormous chunk. Of course, I’ll likely set the chunksize to 4 or 5 MB to reduce the file size, but the smaller chunksize works well on the D3 225 while constructing the presets. It’s especially valuable to use the chunksize feature while starting the presets. No more trial and error to get them started. The chunksize is also a good measure when shooting to see if you have enough room on your memory card. Surely someone has used this feature to improve the performance of their workflow.

I honestly think UR could be a neat place. Unfortunately, I don’t find it to be a viable tool for my everyday workflow. It’s not that I don’t like it. I quite like the idea, but there is just something that just doesn’t work for me. UI is very clean and the features are nice, but too many clicks and transitions can be time-consuming. You have to work through so many steps and then you end up having a lot of actions (beware to auto run all the actions).
You can do a lot with UR, but for me, it wasn’t a very convenient tool. Regarding the new features in PS, I must admit I didn’t think anything was too exciting. But I am very happy to see the one click fill. One click fill is awesome, even if it is only for some people. In my personal workflow, I don’t need that kind of functionality because I usually always want to get a bit closer to the look I want. I do like the new Paint bucket, but this would depend on the amount of people you work with. I sincerely don’t feel like I needed it because I don’t want to pay a lot of attention to the details when I do a job, I just don’t see the need to draw the lines or mask them. I’m not sure if this is a fact but I read it somewhere that when you work with a small team, the individual effort isn’t felt as strongly as with a bigger team. So, it’s common that the person with the best technical skills will be the most respected and accepted. Some people might say it’s the leader. I guess it works for them, so that’s what matters.

The bottom line is that this is a very good and useful update for people who shoot on Fujifilm X-Trans sensors in RAW format. I have had my share of trouble with RAW from the Fujifilm GFX and GF6/7 backs, but the experience is significantly better with the X-Pro1. Performance issues aside, Lightroom 5.2 is very impressive, both in terms of functionality as well as raw processing. I have tested it on the K20D and found it to work very well. Note that the D610 and 800D are probably not among Lightroom’s better performers. Some color noise is still present on the D610, for example. Excellent performance on the K20D, though. The biggest disappointment, however, is in the D800 performance. This camera does not get along with Lightroom in terms of raw processing, be it the K20D or a full-frame X-E1. I think we need a complete camera review of the D800 before this camera gets a free pass from me. If you want to go full frame, then also consider the Sony A7, which is about the same price and gets along with Lightroom just fine. But if you shoot with the D800, you should consider a future upgrade to a “proper” D4 or D800e to experience the full potential of the D800’s sensor.
