I’m converting an SQL server to act as an Active Directory domain controller. And I’m thinking it makes sense to format it as a domain. (The reason for the conversion is that the SQL server was previously a domain controller, and the old machine running SQL server was sitting in a closet).
I’m wondering if there is any downside to doing this. In particular, can I expect problems if I run a software configuration that requires a machine be a domain controller? Is it better to create a new SQL server, move my database, etc. so that it can be a regular member of the domain?

Absolutely. Your DC will still be able to service client access, etc.
I often have a SQL Server as a DC in parallel with a Domain Controller as well. My SQL Server also serves as the Cluster database and as a DC for the Windows Cluster.
