The most significant change for me is the addition of Adobe’s Sensei machine learning engine, a bold hardware-acceleration effort (of which I approve wholeheartedly). Though I wish its results were exposed in a more sophisticated manner, a welcome addition has been the smart crop feature. Here, you can square, cube, or circle any given area on-the-fly in a still frame, without a tinge of any effects or processing.

As a digital photo hobbyist, I still find myself making the occasional mistake with color and exposure, but beginner’s camera features are plentiful and easy to understand. Saving images in various sizes is also fairly intuitive, letting you tweak the image to fit whatever purpose you have in mind. I do wish there was a single-click option for direct clipping paths, but the way around it is still rewarding.

As a multimedia creator, I find that the ability to create all kinds of styles for documents is a terrific time saver. Rather than creating individual styles and then layering them like I would with Microsoft Publisher, all the styles can be created in Photoshop Elements and applied as needed. The selection tools remain rich and well-engineered, though I still wish there was a way to copy and paste selections without having to adjust them first.

(Side note: I’m not aware of any RAW editing programs on the market today that do this yet, but that’s likely to change quickly if this proves successful.) Previously, this was only possible with Adobe’s own development suite, which is certainly no longer one big step behind the competition.
